Tim Jones
Name: Tim Jones
Vehicle: 1993 Land Rover Defender 110 200tdi RHD - a vehicle that’s about as analog and low-tech as they come—at least in the powertrain. It’s completely visceral and tactile, which feels perfectly aligned with my love for the outdoors. I wanted something that required finesse and simplicity rather than automation, and my Defender delivers just that.
Modifications: Suspension: Old Man Emu dampers, HD springs, limited-slip differential in the front axle and the transfer case, locking (Detroit locker) rear differential, transmission replaced/upgraded to an R380 with a lower 5th gear ratio for better highway manners, fuel pump tuned to coax a little more power out of the little diesel engine, and built a complete over-landing kit for the rear cargo space, which keeps all our camping gear organized for longer trips.
Previous Rovers Owned: This is my first Land Rover, but I’ve wanted a classic defender for nearly 2 decades. I’m sure there'll be more in my future.
About Me:
I’ve always been drawn to the outdoors and have pursued a variety of adventurous activities, including competitive mountain biking and road bike racing, completing an Ironman, snowboarding, scuba diving, swimming, trail running, and backpacking (especially in the Sierras). My Defender gives me a way to explore that doesn’t require the same physical demand as my other hobbies, while allowing me to cover more ground and experience even more of the wilderness. I’ve worked in the auto industry for over 25 years, much of that focusing on vehicle development and testing in diverse environments—on-road, off-road, closed courses, and beyond. While I’ve always loved automobiles for their engineering, ability to excite, and the experiences they create, I found something uniquely fulfilling in the Defender’s analog simplicity and its ability to take me deep into the backcountry. I also love to learn and grow and find great joy in helping others do the same, which makes being part of a community like this especially rewarding.
Favorite Destinations:
I’m still relatively new to off-roading, so I’m searching for my perfect destination. That said, I gravitate toward high mountains, cool air, altitude, and trails with few other people around. So far, I’ve loved exploring So Cal’s mountains and deserts, a few high mountain trails in Colorado, and was blown away by some of Utah’s trails. I can’t wait to continue expanding my list of favorite destinations with the club.
Why I Love SCRC:
I originally joined the Southern California Rover Club to find people to drive with and make sure I got out on the trail. What I actually found was so much more: an incredible group of people who are as excited about adventure and Rovers as I am. The club brings together folks from all walks of life with diverse jobs, hobbies, and experiences, all coming together to enjoy the outdoors and the Rover lifestyle. I’ve met knowledgeable trail leaders and drivers who are always willing to share their wisdom, and I’ve found great friends to chat with over a fire and a cold beverage. Whether it’s geeking out over modifications or solving trail challenges, this club has made off-roading a truly special experience, and made it accessible to anyone with a rover and sense of adventure.
